Tournament Rules

* Champion's Tournament * Contestants * CT Judges *

1. No power playing. Anything ruled power playing by the judges will lead to immediate disqualification.

2. The word of the judges is final.

3. You may submit up to three characters for the tournament, at the start of each round you will be required to state which character you are using.

4. One 'fan character' may be submitted, as long as it is not the only character you enter into the first round of the tournament - you must enter at least one 'original' character. By fan character we mean a character that would fit in to a world not created by you, but copyrighted terms such as Hogwarts, Jedi, X-Men or other recognisable words aren't allowed to appear in the character sheets.

5. Characters that the judges feel are copies of characters designed by published authors shall be removed, if it was your only character, you will be required to submit another one quickly, or you will be disqualified.

6. Genres can, and will be crossed. Don’t be surprised if your Sci-fi character ends up in a round with a high fantasy character.

7. Each round will last one week, after the allotted time the role-play pages will be locked, if you have particular trouble getting online that week, notify us and we’ll see what we can do.

8. Have fun.

The winner receives the coloured Octopus, participants receive the green Octopus badge:

2006-01-12 [NamelessMerc]: Question! What is the curb on profanities?

2006-01-12 [iippo]: In-game or in comments?

2006-01-12 [iippo]: A good player is considerate towards other players. If they're character constantly swears in a fairly family-type game (with the possibility of the other players' younger siblings or children watching the game), it is inconsiderate of them.

2006-01-12 [iippo]: Think other competitions (art for example). Artistic nudity is allowed, graphic pornography isn't. Apply that rule to the in-game swearing.

2006-01-12 [NamelessMerc]: Makes sense, I was just thinking that Antanios has a tendency to curse, I'll have to make sure he doesn't XD

2006-01-12 [Veltzeh]: Why not just write something "the character used the most explicit and profane insult the galaxy had heard this far"?

2006-01-12 [Duredhel]: I figure that as long as its something the character would say there's no problem. In any case if a player has a problem with swearing he can simpyl state it in the comment board at the beggining of the round.

2006-01-12 [NamelessMerc]: Heh, that's what I usually do, only it's more "Tethis exhaled softly, a curse accompanying as naturally as the breath itself." Antanios isn't mine. He's [Angels Of San-Angelus].

2006-01-12 [iippo]: Each player for himself. And Veltzeh's suggestion is the wisest and Duredhel has a point. If the character sheet says the character is highly intellectual, but he punctuates his speech with fuckcuntarse I'd say the player doesn't keep in character. "Keep in character, remain considerate to other players."

2006-01-12 [Veltzeh]: Then I can mention a math professor who presumedly is very smart, but he swears right in front of a hundred people in lecture. XD

2006-01-12 [NamelessMerc]: He might just be comfortable with the students... Or want a new job o.0;

2006-01-12 [iippo]: I mean obviously punctuating speech with that, like teenagers do. (You know what I mean Vel, the vittusaatanas like in that film Pitka Kuuma Kesa)

2006-01-12 [Veltzeh]: Yeah, I know. I don't watch films like that but I get more than enough of it anyway. X)

2006-01-12 [iippo]: :O You're making it sound like it's a porn-film or something. XD But that film's what started the trend back in my school and I never forgave it.

2006-01-12 [Duredhel]: porn? I'm sure Vetlz watches those kind of films XD!

2006-01-12 [Veltzeh]: No, I don't watch porn films. I don't like the sounds, you see, just the visuals. XD

2006-01-12 [Duredhel]: yeah sure >_> *coughtentaclescough*

2006-01-12 [iippo]: That would qualify as watching. You just don't listen them XD

2006-01-12 [Duredhel]: good point ^^, good point, no one ever said, "Veltz listens to porn movies"

2006-01-12 [Veltzeh]: Yeah XD Well, my computer is a bit deficient and I live with my parents and little siblings so watching stuff on TV would be a bit uncomfortable. :P

2006-01-12 [Jeed]: what will be the points we will be judged on?

2006-01-12 [iippo]: Hmm, let me consult the other judges if we're going to tell you entrants the criteria.

2006-01-12 [Veltzeh]: Oh, I have a question about tense and person... well, specifically, what tense and person (well, using anything else than third wouldn't really do good but yeah, better to ask) should the posts be in? Or will it vary and then we'll just keep it consistent during that specific round?

2006-01-12 [Kyrinn]: Ive seen this before and Ive been interested, but Im not sure how it works. Even reading the rules Im not all there, and as an RPer I want to fully understand it..

2006-01-12 [iippo]: I think the usual third person past tense (He did this) is the wisest.

2006-01-12 [abandonedhouse7 7]: Can you submit characters that you're already using in RPs?

2006-01-12 [Kyrinn]: this has been done in the past (I think).. am I right? ^^

2006-01-12 [iippo]: Kyrinn is right, old characters from existing rps are acceptable, just as well as new ones.

2006-01-12 [iippo]: We won't directly tell the judging criteria to the contestants. Art competitions don't tell you how to draw well, we want existing talent. A good player will know how to make a good bio.

2006-01-12 [Duredhel]: good decision ^^

2006-01-12 [iippo]: We don't want to watch Mary Sues playing, that's why bios are judged. Also character creation is incredibly important for being a good player. If you don't have enough imagination to make an original character, how can you have enough imagination to play interestingly? We want FULLY excellent player as our champion, has to be good at all aspects of playing. So in the end rounds there will be some amazing role-playing going on.

2006-01-12 [Duredhel]: The RULES are there, the JUDGING CRITERIA is a different thing, as long as you follow all of the rules listed in this page, you'll be fine ^_^

2006-01-12 [Jeed]: the rules arent completely clear. you dont define anything particular under god modding or power playing. your idea of that could be or are different from mine, and probably everyone elses

2006-01-12 [Duredhel]: Not everything will be a fight, in fact some of the best RPing is seen outside of fight situations. Now if you want clarification on the rules, you can either message a judge or read roleplaying for dummies, as indicated up there.

2006-01-12 [NamelessMerc]: 0.0; Dur, take a deep breath. You're coming across just a little snide. Pithy, if you will.

2006-01-12 [iippo]: Roleplaying for dummies will define our views of godmoding or powerplaying. And we will worry about making the out of genre problems, all you need to do is keep in character.

2006-01-12 [iippo]: This will be free form roleplaying which includes but is not limited to fighting. I for one am dying to see the ending rounds with the best of the best playing out a romantic scene or a domestic scene or whatever we put them into.

2006-01-13 [Wes Foxx]: :P This is supposed to be for fun, ya know. Look at me, I'm not using a character I've labored over and honed in countless fights for months and years, I'm using two of my most dynamic personalities from my story series, not worrying whether or not I'm gonna be able to win.

2006-01-13 [iippo]: This is the page of the rules. Up there it says "word of the judges is final." That is there because we knew there would be people who would not understand the concept (=bad players) and would start these flaming wars. I repeat, anyone who has problem with how we run this contest: message me in private (yes, everyone can message me, because I want to keep flaming off the pages, because these pages are official) so I will explain in detail. So far I have seen two people [Jeed] and [M. P. Ness] complaining about having to make their characters have a personality. Message me and I can explain to you in detail why exactly this is not a fighting game.

2006-01-13 [iippo]: Determining the winner will not be any of your problem, because you are not judges. We will deal with that. It is possible, just as it is possible to tell who has most talent in drawing, who makes the best point in poetry and whose short story was most compelling. Of course it is also about opinion, but we have planned this through that it is the Right opinion that is used as the criteria -- hence we not telling you what it is because we're not going to influence the creative process that you players will go through. (these two comments were aimed at the flamers but all people should take note of them).

2006-01-13 [windowframe]: And the moral of the story is: If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. And also, possibly, that Silvie is a little trigger happy with the delete button. o.< I apologise to all the non-rude commenters that had comments deleted, but without the original comments, it looked like people were talking to themselves ^^;;

2006-01-13 [Delladreing]: ...o.O dude not to self, don't log off and leave Silvie on her own with annoying n00bs, comments just dissapear before I even get a chance to read them and laugh at them O.o

2006-01-13 [NamelessMerc]: Aye, she doesn't have a happy trigger finger, she just set it to auto.

2006-01-13 [iippo]: Any chatterish commenting relating to the tournament will be appreciated (=not deleted) in the page champion's tournament Leave the other pages for related questions.

2006-01-13 [Faulty Limerence]: Okay, is everyone going to be RP'ing at the same time? Or what?

2006-01-13 [iippo]: Hmm, yes, but not in the same scene. So there will be a smaller amount of people in one wiki.

2006-01-13 [Faulty Limerence]: Aiyah...I was hoping it would just be a two person at a time deal...this is going to get messy...I hate RP'ing and then getting dragged down by people who may or may not be as well spoken as me. (Truly not trying to sound arrogant...)

2006-01-13 [iippo]: That's what I'm telling you. You will not interact with all the players. They will have their own settig in a different wiki, you will have your own. Small groups, later pairs or solo-playing.

2006-01-13 [Faulty Limerence]: Ah okay, I see.

2006-01-14 [Kitara Softpaw]: I think I'm going to try, just for the fun of it. I love Roleplaying. I don't think I'll make it too far, but I can always try. After all, trying and failing is better than not trying at all.

2006-01-14 [Blood Raven]: plus you get a cool badge ^^

2006-01-14 [iippo]: Not only any badge: a badge by [Ittai]! :D

2006-01-16 [Kitara Softpaw]: Ooh! I almost forgot about the badge. The only problem is, most of my characters aren't human. They're wolves, or unicorns, or dragons, or humanoids. I've only recently ventured into the realm of actually roleplaying humans, so my characters aren't that good yet. Oh, are things like wings allowed?

2006-01-16 [Kai Crewger]: doesn't say anything against it. 'Genres can, and will be crossed'

2006-01-16 [Kitara Softpaw]: True. I might actually have a decently developed character for this than. *is happy*

2006-01-16 [Wes Foxx]: :P Just look at mine. Wes Foxx and Zanno are both anthros.

2006-01-16 [Lunnie]: Hooo! So this is where all the people checking my RP guide out come from. -grins-

2006-01-16 [iippo]: ^_^;; Heh, yeah. Hope you don't mind.

2006-01-16 [Duredhel]: RPing for Dummies has become a pseudo RP bible XD

2006-01-16 [Kai Crewger]: *laughs* you must admit, it is a very good guide

2006-01-16 [Lunnie]: No, I don't mind. In fact, I think it's good that it's being used, that way more people can know about it. It also forces some people to read it because they might want to win this competition.

2006-01-16 [Kitara Softpaw]: I've seen it before, it's very good. It helped me improve my bios a lot. A friend of mine told me to check it out when I was having difficulties with my bio. +^.^=

2006-01-16 [Kitara Softpaw]: I've seen it before, it's very good. It helped me improve my bios a lot. A friend of mine told me to check it out when I was having difficulties with my bio. =^.^=

2006-01-16 [iippo]: Ok, we can now stop the praises so any actual rule-related questions could get through.

2006-01-16 [Lunnie]: -laughs- Sorry for the disruption I've cause. ^__^

2006-01-18 [Noexistantanymo]: "Don’t be surprised if your Sci-fi character ends up in a round with a high fantasy character. " How the hell's that gonna work? My char running with a sword against some mech with high cal. weapons or some kind of lasers? O_O

2006-01-18 [windowframe]: It'll work. Trust us :)

2006-01-18 [NamelessMerc]: I imagine the whole 'bullets bouncing off blades' scenario XD

2006-01-18 [Faulty Limerence]: Just dodge smart one. Besides, they will group us together fairly. And you don't RP the mech, you RP the pilot.

2006-01-18 [Kitara Softpaw]: Okay, does the character have to fight??

2006-01-18 [windowframe]: They may do. They may not do. It's a mini adventure.

2006-01-18 [Kitara Softpaw]: Well, someone just told me that since my one character doesn't know how to use any weapons and she only has defensive and healing powers, and they said she won't get far just cause she's not that good at fighting...

2006-01-18 [Lunnie]: Mmm somehow I believe people automatically assume that because the contest is divided in rounds that it will be fighting only. >__>; I don't recall reading any specifications about it though and am quite aware it won’t just be fighting, but I do think it might be good to mention it somewhere other than just comments every time someone asks. xD If it had been mentioned somewhere other than the comments that the rounds are not just composed of fighting please stab me for mentioning this what so ever.

2006-01-18 [iippo]: Just tell people to stop trashing your character when you know what you're doing with them. They don't know what will happen in the tournament, you don't know, no one will until we let them know (which isn't anytime soon)

2006-01-19 [Noexistantanymo]: still, my blade isn't made for blocking laser beams.. And even though i team up with someone armed with a gun, i still feel it's unfair since that person is going to do more damage in range than i can.. >.<

2006-01-19 [Yncke]: You don't know how it will done, so stop worrying until you're certain there's a problem. ;)

2006-01-19 [Noexistantanymo]: No i won't.. I like to complain.. ^_^ Ah well.. I'll just keep it to myself then..

2006-01-19 [Veltzeh]: And besides, you can lose with more skill and style than the other person can win! XD

2006-01-19 [windowframe]: [Yncke]'s right, you should really stop worrying until you're certain there's a problem, especially since you seem to have the wrong end of the stick. :/

2006-01-19 [Kai Crewger]: don't worry about it. the moderators have a way worked out where any genre of character could work. actually, I don't think it's that hard... *ponders*

2006-01-19 [iippo]: And people! Stop assuming it's a battle! A 'fight' means many things; I for one fight with my boyfriend all the time, and that has nothing to do with guns or swords. Think outside of the box. *is tempted to make a gigantic unkillable troll foe that will steal everybody's weapons*

2006-01-19 [Faulty Limerence]: We will be judged on our skills in the written language, correct?

2006-01-19 [iippo]: Yes, but not limited to that. (visual language like pictures will not be considered at any point of judging)

2006-01-19 [Faulty Limerence]: I know that. i just meant that people who can't use at least semi-proper grammar and punctuation will be counted against, right?

2006-01-19 [Noexistantanymo]: My apologies iippo, for still thinking of this as i might fight someone xD I'm gonna look forward to this though.. good luck ^^

2006-01-19 [deus-ex-machina]: iippo argues over who's going to use the last of the foundation with her boyfriend. Somehow, I always win. They're both loosahs!

2006-01-19 [iippo]: *as usually, has no idea what deus is saying, for he never makes sense* :P

2006-01-19 [deus-ex-machina]: Make-up foundation! How can you say I don't make sense? You're always arguing over it. God knows, you both need it. I just think it smells pretty. =D

2006-01-20 [Lunnie]: I have a question. Are all rounds elimination rounds or is that a secret too?

2006-01-20 [iippo]: Yes lunnie. :P :P  Means yes, they are elimination rounds.

2006-01-20 [Lunnie]: -dances around in a bar of gorillas- Oh wonderful! ;D Thanks for answering. ^__^

2006-01-20 [Anomynous]: Two questions: Do they have to be fantasy characters (e.g. Can I have a NY cop in here?) 2nd: How long does the bio have to be for the first round? Thanks!

2006-01-20 [iippo]: 2) As long or short as you feel necessary, no limits or guidelines. 1) All genres welcome, including modern days.

2006-01-20 [Faulty Limerence]: You never confirmed my question iipo.

2006-01-20 [iippo]: It's sort of a hazy area. I think it reads on one of the pages that the feffing ugly IM-language and leet will not get you far, but people with English as their second/third/fourth/+ language shouldn't feel disencouraged to join, because they feel that all that matters is the language. You are judged on yuor roleplaying skills, not just writing skills.

2006-01-20 [windowframe]: :D feffing is spreading! ^^ Fear the feffage *grin*

2006-01-20 [Lothuriel]: You really need to define what power playing is. I, persoanlly know what it is and despise it. But then, I have been a gammer for 13 of my 30 years of life. Trust me, there are many who don't understand the full effect of what it is or the problems it can cause.

2006-01-20 [windowframe]: Well, since none of them have asked... and if they don't know, then they don't deserve to win anyway ^^

2006-01-20 [iippo]: Our definition of power play is the same as in Role playing for dummies-wiki's definition is. And powerplaying player will not be a good player, and thus not out champion and will be eliminated in the beginning rounds anyway. What we need is loads of the brilliant players to challenge each others.

2006-01-20 [Kyrinn]: powerplayers should be burned. I dont do much table top gaming anymore because the ppl I gamed with turned into powerplayers and spent the session whining about who was stronger. *rolls eyes*

2006-01-20 [iippo]: I thought most tabletops were rule and number or at least dice-based to avoid that. o.O

2006-01-20 [Kyrinn]: nope, [iippo] it doesnt matter whether you use dice. They cheat on their roles, fudge numbers, and bitch to high heaven. The last game I played, one of them wiped out the entire battalion sent to fight us in the first round, then he spent the next half hour gloating. I tore up my character and walked away from it...

2006-01-20 [iippo]: I lived in a very small area where people's main interests were boozing in the park. Anyhoo, here no powerplaying, or there be a nice moose-foot shaped imprint on the player's behind before they can say "I r00l".

2006-01-21 [Anomynous]: Gracias, iippo! I was worried my bio would be too long, hehe

2006-01-21 [NamelessMerc]: Bah!!! o.0'

2006-01-30 [Elisha Kelly]: i have a question about power playing... does it include like if someone goes to stab you, then you say it does but part of the dagger breaks off... I mean who has say over a weapon after it pierces the skin???

2006-01-30 [Kai Crewger]: whoever has the next turn. try to leave it open ended like it says, like don't run up to someone, stab them fifty times, draw the weapon out and run away all in one turn

2006-01-30 [iippo]: Easier to think this way: if you stab someone, you don't get to tell what happens at all. So, if the dagger does break (assume you have a skin of steel or summat), you need to describe it, because the other person can't. You are allowed to break other people's equipment, but if you do it impossibly like "your dagger scratches the side of my head and its blade falls off", then it's just stupid playing.

2006-01-30 [Elisha Kelly]: kewl... I was thinking more along the lines of a dagger hitting a bone and breaking the tip or something... :P

2006-01-30 [iippo]: As long as it's fairly sensible, you decide what happens when you are stabbed.

2006-01-30 [Elisha Kelly]: kewl... i wasna sure... new to the whole roleplaying thing! :D

2006-01-30 [NamelessMerc]: *Enters Jackie Chan Adventures mode* One moooOOOooore thing!!! What if the loser in each round feels unfairly treated? o.0; Is there gonna be a system of appeal? I was just thinking for the guy who run's Bob's Diner, he'll probably complain if some judges are in his rounds.

2006-01-30 [windowframe]: If people don't want specific people juding them, they can say something before hand, and we'll work around it, but we're not telling them who'se judging what anyway. Plus, the judges will be working in pairs from round one, so it'll be hard for one of them to decide to unfairly penalise a player.

2006-01-30 [deus-ex-machina]: I love Uncle. One moooOOOOOooore thing! I'm not going to vote in any one's favour, so if people accuse me of dumping on you, they'll be going down the wrong path... but feel free to tell Silvie and iippo you don't want me judging your bios.

2006-01-30 [iippo]: And the rule "judges word is final" is a pretty clear clue that there is no appeal; just as there is no appealing thing in other official contests.

2006-02-12 [windowframe]: Arrite people, last chance to GET RID OF THOSE "UNFINISHED" SIGNS! If you don't remove it before the deadline, your bio won't be judged! Even if you’ve finished your bio, and just not removed the ‘unfinished’ notice, so check that you have!

2006-02-12 [windowframe]: You shouldn't have said anything you would need to apologise for. End of story. There's no reason to insult if you're not even sure there's anything to insult.

2006-04-26 [Anomynous]: Question... how many characters are advancing to the next round?

2006-04-26 [windowframe]: Answer: Wait and find out.

2006-04-26 [deus-ex-machina]: There is no set limit - it all depends on how many pass the judging.

2006-04-29 [Lothuriel]: Has this contest been put on hold?

2006-04-29 [Kai Crewger]: still just judging, i believe

2006-04-29 [iippo]: The contest is indeed very much active still, as the judges are doing their work. We know it's taking long, and everyone just needs to take it easy and be patient.

2006-04-29 [NamelessMerc]: We are doing, we are being very patient *Holds up 312th sketch of Prince of Persia* We're all staying very busy. *Twitch*

2006-04-29 [Lothuriel]: I was simply curious.

2006-04-29 [windowframe]: And you simply got an answer. :) And we all lived happily ever after. W00t!

2006-04-30 [iippo]: This still not a chat-page ^_^;

2006-05-01 [windowframe]: Shut up? ;)
